TOKYO -- Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Japan's top manufacturer of consumer electric and electronic equipment, announced Wednesday it will start manufacturing compact disc players in West Germany next month with mechanism jointly developed with Philips of the Netherlands.

The Osaka-based company said the production will be undertaken by MB Video G.m.b.H., a joint venture between Matsushita and Robert Bosch G.m.b.H. of Stuttgart.

MBV, based in Osterode, has been producing video cassette recorders for its parent companies since 1983. It is 65 percent owned by Matsushita and 35 percent by Robert Bosch.

Matsushita has agreed with Philips to jointly develop mechanism to be supplied to MBV for production of CD players, the Japanese company said.

The Matsushita-Philip agreement will substantially strengthen the collaborative relationship between the two firms, it said.

The two partners already have technical cooperation for the production of VHS-format video cassette recorders since 1983, the company said.

The company said some 70,000 CD players will be manufactureed at MBV until March 1989. Employment at the production facility will increase to about 100 by the end of March 1989.
